We were faced with the challenge of designing a contemporary single-family home in the middle of suburbia, amidst a sea of Victorian-inspired houses. The client purchased a vacant lot in Sorel, a suburb of Montreal, to be close to her family. She imagined a house that would stand out from its surroundings.
The form of the house was created by offsetting 2 rectangular bars in plan, bridging over them with a gable roof and chamfering the corners. These chamfered cuts in the roof both create dynamic angular perspectives and create intimate covered exterior spaces such as the front entry and the screened-in porch. A small footprint of 1200 sqft was used on a generous sized site, leaving the existing trees undisturbed. The house was oriented perpendicular to the road, creating a semi-private wooded garden on the north side of the house. Southern light is brought in by two majestic skylights positioned at the center of the house. An angular yellow volume dividing the two skylights both warms the light, and diverts its direction.

The clients wished to enlarge their 800sq-ft bungalow by adding a second floor to the existing structure. However, the poor conditions of the foundations quickly proved this option impossible. In turn, the architects studied the possibility to build an extension into the backyard. Two major constraints were to be found: (1) the Municipality forbade to construct higher than the existing roof membrane, and (2) the presence of rock 4-0 ft into the ground which made the construction of a basement very costly. From those limitations, an unconventional and affordable solution was developed: compressing the spaces on numerous split-levels to yield the desired rooms, with a stunning double height dining room and a generous provision of natural light.
The first gesture was to lower the new dining room to the level of the exterior terrace and to link it with the kitchen and music room through a vast open space. Suspended atop the dining room, a translucent reading cube emerges from the master bedroom. Meanwhile, a light well ensures that direct sunlight reaches the dining room all day long. The kitchen is organized around an over-dimensioned central counter that becomes the focus of the social life in the house.
To meet the extremely tight budget, the selected building materials were deliberately left raw and untouched. The floor is covered mostly with an antic waxed maple flooring while the dining room uses fibrocement panels. The roof structure of the existing house was left exposed and painted in white to lighten up the spaces. The exterior back facade is covered with black pine planks with industrial corrugated steel sheet with galvalum finish.
Playing in a subversive manner with the numerous constraints, the architects yielded a unique project. Simple and modest, the St-Hubert residence offers nonetheless a rich spatial experience with generous and luminous spaces.

The clients had outgrown their 1920’s house on a large lot on Montreal’s south shore. They wanted a contemporary extension that would harmonize with their existing house and highlight and expose the structural brick. The existing house and the extension were separated by a glazed volume where the vertical circulation of the house is located. The existing house was re-organized to better suit the needs of the clients, where the entry and living room make up the ground floor and the children’s quarters on the second floor.
Three double height spaces link the communal areas of the ground floor with the more private spaces of the second floor while maintaining a warm atmosphere in the house.
The extension is organized into 2 intertwining volumes. A brick volume makes up the base and becomes the support for a steel clad volume that projects out into the backyard. The ‘sleeping basket’ is found at this projection where a large window frames the foliage. This becomes a space to relax and gaze out towards the garden as well as an area for the children to play while maintaining contact with the kitchen and dining spaces below.

A couple with a passion for cooking acquired a house on Drolet street right by Montreal’s Jean-Talon market. They wanted to do a complete renovation and re-organization of the house and had 2 main demands; firstly they wanted a large kitchen island to be the focal point of the house, and secondly they wanted their living spaces on the second floor where they would benefit from more natural light, while keeping the more intimate bedroom spaces on the ground floor.
The front door opens onto a double height entry foyer where a sculptural stair draws the focus upwards. The lines of the stair invite the natural and fluid transition from the ground floor entrance to the living spaces above.
The open plan kitchen, living and dining room are found on the brightly lit second floor. These are all organized around a long linear island topped by a beautiful soap stone countertop. The island basks in natural light as a linear skylight follows its lines directly above. The skylight is interrupted by a monolithic range that protrudes from the ceiling above.
A block of cabinets, clad in a mix of anigre veneer and lacquered doors, is recessed into the wall behind the island. This block conceals the fridge as well as other appliances, pantry storage and a powder room. Towards the back of the house, the island breaks-off, into a second island that cantilevers into a brightly lit corner becoming the family’s breakfast table. Here, a patio door leads to a large exterior terrace overlooking the backyard.

The changing needs of a growing family triggered the complete reconfiguration and extension of their existing 1950 concrete house. They wanted a contemporary extension that would harmonize with the modern spirit of the original house.
The extension fills the void created by the split level of the existing house and is capped on either side with generous glazing. The living areas of the ground floor are distributed around a central core that has become the new focal point of the house. The new master bedroom found on the the second floor is secluded from the children’s bedrooms and accessed by a glass catwalk spanning the entrance of the home.

This project involved the expansion of a spacious single-story Outremont residence built in the 1960s. Situated on a site with a steep incline and majestic view, the two-floor expansion was designed to offer a generous window on the horizon.
The architectural concept involved the addition of living spaces in the form of a long ribbon situated laterally to and in line with the contours of the existing structure. This ribbon folds and unfolds, thus offering multiple views of the surrounding landscape.
The interior comprises open adjoining living spaces bathed in natural light. The pale-hued textures and materials enhance the spacious aspect of the rooms.
Clad in anthracite-coloured concrete panels, the cantilevered extension reflects in the St. Marc limestone-lined swimming pool, surrounded by the suspended deck in white-painted concrete. This mineral setting marries perfectly with the impressive canopy of mature maple trees that offer shade to this oasis at the heart of the city.
The extension takes advantage of the site’s unique topography, overlooking the pool and landscaped terrace like a mirador.

The concept of the house is based on the physical distinction between the living space and the work space. The volumetry is modulated through the introduction of a vertical shear which divides the house in two zones. This rift is marked by the introduction of a double flight stair, a glass catwalk and a double height ray of indirect light. It is within this aperture that the playfulness and dynamic of the house is taking place, where all viewpoints converge.
The street facade is composed of dark brown brick accentuated by a series of recessed horizontal joints. A glow of warmth is brought with the introduction of various Spanish cedar panels in conjunction with the window layout.
The articulation of the garden side facade is formally conceived as a coat collar providing a visual protection from the two adjacent neighbors. The black undulated steel paneling is projecting from the roof line and down onto the east side, to be cut on its return on the west facade. The ochre color of the painted concrete panels creates a sense of drama in contrast with the sobriety of the street facade.
Bringing forward the quality of natural light within the house, the general palette of materials is chosen to be varied but toned down : white for most of the walls and kitchen cabinets with a few accents of black paint, a concrete floor for the ground floor, white oak for the second floor, stairs and built-in furniture, natural steel for the bookshelves and the handrail, black slate for the bathroom and the kitchen wall. Only one accent of ochre is applied to the sliding doors of the painting studio.
Composing with the constraints imposed by the city to keep the street facade subdued and with a strong desire to integrate the rear facade to Montreal’s typical backyard architecture, the house nevertheless yields a distinct personality and a calm sense of humanity.

The client wanted to utilize the second storey of her 1920s duplex by converting her former rental unit into 3 bedrooms and an office space. While the grey-stone front facade only required minor restorations, the back of the house was transformed completely. An emphasis on transparency creates constant visual and physical connections with the backyard.
A cedar clad volume, containing the master bedroom, punches through the glass exterior wall and cantelivers over the backyard, sheltering the patio below. The wood cladding continues through to the inside, blurring the boundaries between interior and exterior.

The client’s priority was to maximize the natural light in their new live/work house in Montreal’s Mile-Ex district. This was made challenging by the east-west orientation of the infill lot. However, our design fills even the core of the house with light through the implementation of a 2 storey light-well which runs the length of the southern side of the house. Additional light is reflected into this light-well by the client’s office space – a white volume that sits atop the northern edge light-well. Spaces on the second storey also benefit from the light well’s luminosity; the walls adjacent to it are fully glazed and a floor to ceiling piece of frosted glass brings a very soft light into the bathroom.
The expressive back facade of the house is defined by the angular geometry of the floating steel box. The front facade, however, is composed primarily of bricks to conform with the heritage character of the neighbourhood. Two disjuncted apertures break up the brick façade and are lined in aluminum. As only one side of the brick was glazed, a random mix of forward and backward facing bricks were laid to create a more dynamic façade.
