Tassone House by Baldasso Cortese

Designed by Baldasso Cortese, this clean and uncompromised project is a series of spaces that help the building utilise a small site. A palette of natural materials and large expanses of glass help the building “dissolve” into the garden. While all extraneous elements have been meticulously integrated into the building fabric to create simple and strong forms without compromising functionality. Photographer: Peter Clarke Photography.

The Spiral House is a residence for a young family of 4 in Surabaya. The site is a rectangular 464 m2 corner lot located in a new residential development in the west of the city, in a condition best described as semi-urban, where houses are grouped in clusters and share a party wall with each other. The brief for the design calls for a courtyard house with indoor-outdoor living spaces.
The program and massing of the house is designed upon the concept of spatial and programmatic continuity. The continuity allows the whole house to be experienced in one continuous sequence starting from the most public area (the main entrance) gradating to the most private area (the master bedroom). This architectural concept unfortunately mandates a long thin mass which would not fit the site that is relatively square in proportion. As a solution that becomes the parti model of the house, the elongated mass is folded several times to create an angular yet continuous spiral, that then also define the central courtyard of the house. Antithetical to the typical middle-upper class house where a void is usually placed indoors above the living room to make the house appear grander, here the void is placed outside in the form of the courtyard to signify a paradigm shift that places nature in a more central role in residential family living.
The living area of the house is located on the east side of the house on ground level to take advantage of the prevailing wind for the majority of the year from the east. The floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors around the house’s primary living area blur the boundary between indoor and outdoor, bringing the natural environment inside and creating an indoor-outdoor living. When doors are opened, the side yard, the living area, and the courtyard becomes one connected indoor-outdoor living space that is naturally ventilated. The courtyard and the swimming pool becomes an extension to the living room. The house embodies the essence of indoor outdoor living in the tropical climate where deep overhang is desired to shelter spaces from the weather.
Tropical landscaping is designed both in the side yard and also the courtyard not only to create privacy and spatial separation from the street but also to create a microclimate so that the air surrounding the house is cooler and thus the prevailing east wind is cooled before it ventilates the house. The partly shaded swimming pool provides an additional psychological cooling effect to the indoor environment while also creating a feeling of serenity to the living and dining area.
While the first floor is mainly rectangular to maximize space, the second floor is at an angle; the end of the house points due south to frame the view to the green space on the south and to avoid facing other houses in a frontal manner. The thin massing with operable openings on opposing sides allow for cross ventilation.
By using natural ventilation and by the orientation of the house, the use of air conditioning, which has become a mandate for all living spaces in Surabaya’s hot and humid weather, is significantly minimized. The thin floor plan also allows for ample daylighting and further energy savings.
The house uses a reinforced concrete structure with Autoclaved Aerated Concrete brick walls. While reinforced concrete structure is the common building tradition in Indonesia, the use of aerated concrete walls for private houses is not. Brick walls are the most commonly used materials due to the cheap cost and greater availability. Nevertheless, the aerated concrete walls are used in this house to provide greater insulation against heat and sound, and also are helpful in reducing the structural load of the building. The constrained palette of white walls and clear glass as exterior finishes make the house stand in stark contrast with the surrounding neighborhood of custom designed, eclectic houses. Solid wood floors are used throughout the interior of the house.

The ground floor living areas of Seacombe Grove are separated into two distinct zones. The day/summer zone faces north and west and is integrated with the pool, garden and covered outdoor eating areas, while the night / winter zone faces east and south. The siting response for this project was to have neither a front or back garden, but rather a continuous green outdoor space around the building which is accessible from all lower level living rooms through continuous floor to ceiling glass.

To create a serene family sanctuary that harmoniously connects inhabitants with the surrounding natural environment by combining the most sustainable, eco -friendly materials and energy efficient technologies with minimalist architectural design.
The house is located in the beautiful a rural town of Iceland, a low-developed region committed to the preservation of its beautiful natural scenery and resources.
The design intent embodies Iceland’s respect for the environment, while many countries promote sustainable building, this is our heritage–our national ethos. Implements mnmMOD, a new construction technique developed by Minarc. This modular building system brings the economy and waste-reduction of pre-fab to the elegance and infinite possibility of custom design.
The home is a series of linked cubes serving program. Popping forward from a simple horizontal line is the home’s largest form, a living room, community space, which opens onto the horizon and is set between entry and kitchen. Bedrooms and bathrooms are tucked on the other side of horizontal line which that divides public/private space on the ground floor. Upstairs is a balcony and children’s playroom.

The house is situated on a lot of 37.700 square feet with dense forest vegetation, in the surroundings of the city of São Paulo. The privileged geography of the place – a true amphitheatre with access at the higher part – suggests an occupation that respects its natural characteristics.
For this reason we started with the creation of a platform that would define the human presence upon the territory, in contrast with the natural environment.
This platform of reinforced concrete was cut and folded, adapting it to the site and creating distinct functional regions. In the west wing a swimming pool and external living space were created. In between the two wings, protected by a suspended volume of exposed concrete, we situated the living room and kitchen, integrated in one and the same space. This suspended volume is the intimate area of the house, with three bedrooms at the north- and the suite for the couple at the south façade, separated by a large glass roof for zenith lighting throughout the full width of the volume.

Being a summer house, the main idea is not only creating the interior spaces of the house, but distribute all outer space. The interior spaces seek good relations with the outside world, colonizing their surroundings and their views.
Inspired by the typical Menorca “tanca”, stone walls divisions of the realm. The plot is organized from a space frame, fully passable, based on a trace orthogonal, combining floors, platforms, water, trees, plants, tanca, pergolas, walls and the house itself. By combining these elements we are encountering this approach in which each piece is delimited and acquires its own identity and use within a harmonious whole. The diversity of outdoor stays provides the site a space balanced richness.
The house is situated in the center of the outer solar stays divided in two, front and rear. The hall of the house with two large openings on each side operates as a mixed external-internal transition. Falls outside the pavement causing a passage that connects the back yard with the front porch.
Based on typical lattices “menorquinas” designed a sliding wooden slats fixed set a filter to the outside, they act as sunscreens, giving privacy and multiplying the usability. They combine the vertical slats of the east and west facades with horizontal south facade. Most of these openings are floor to ceiling, allowing for greater continuity to the outside and making the most magnificent views of the site.
